Dennis Helfer (born in Donalda, Alberta) and Elaine Helfer (born in Donalda, Alberta), were his parents. Helfer is of German, English and Swedish descent. She was a student at William E. Hay Composite High School in Stettler, Alberta. She had three sisters. Tammy, Tara, and Trena were also employed by her at the farm where she worked on her grain. At age 17 years old, a scout for models of an agency came across Helfer as she waited in line to enter the cinema.
